Coming Apart- Charles Murray

“I’ll be shocked if there’s another book that so compellingly describes the most important trends in American society.” David Brooks

For any students of recent US politics or anyone desiring to understand the current division in American culture (and increasingly evident right here in Australia) Charles Murray’s latest work is both enlightening and insightful. Drawing on five decades of research, observation and writing- Murray helps the reader to understand just how much the United States- and white American in particular- changed in the half century from 1960-2010 and how such deep divisions could emerge. He helps explain and document the social, economic and political trends that allowed two vastly different sub cultures to develop who seem to share little more than the same language. For a text with this many footnotes and graphs- this is indeed compelling reading- and forces the reader to come to grips with many of the issues that are threatening the survival of the great American experiment.
