My Rebel Mom – A Biography of Cecilia Flores-Oebanda

We were grateful to have Cecilia Flores-Oebanda, an esteemed freedom fighter and modern day slavery abolitionist, as a keynote speaker at the 2015 National Student Leadership Forum in Canberra. She shared her quite remarkable and unbelievable story with the group, and although hearing her in person enables you to feel the power, love and hope that emanates from this petite powerhouse of a woman, this book, authored by her son, fills in many of the details that we were not able to cover.

The spirit of a biography does not emerge out of nowhere. It is formed and defined by time, and in this case, with the author’s relationship with his subject matter. Kip Oebanda’s biography of his mother is more than just a retelling of facts or a chronicling of events. Events are re-told from a unique perspective- from the child of the subject- and experienced with a singular energy. Insights are added, not just for effect, but for searing relevance.

Cecilia Flores-Oebanda personifies many of the qualities that we speak about at the Forum- servant leadership, courage, justice and love- and her story is worth reading.
